  • 'One project for the people of Montana'

    Anna Paige, Montana Free Press|Nov 8, 2023

It's hard to miss the entrance to Jim Dolan's house. A larger-than-life steel monkey popping a wheelie on a motorcycle while holding up the peace sign welcomes you at the front. "Clyde" has been greeting passersby on Airport Road outside of Belgrade for 40 years. Beyond the daredevil monkey is a playground of metallic creations created by Dolan. In the distance, you'll see a crescent moon being used as a perch by Jeannette Rankin, a Montanan and the first woman elected to Congress. Bison with... Full story

  • Writers on the Range: The West has too many visiting hunters

Andrew Carpenter, Writers on the Range|Nov 8, 2023

Hunting may be losing popularity nationally, but in the West the number of hunters is climbing. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in 2022 there were 10% fewer hunters across the country than there were when hunting peaked in the 1980s. At the same time, four Western states - Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Utah - saw more hunters than ever before. A key driver of this trend is out-of-state hunters who have run out of luck in their home states: elk, deer and other big game species have declined precipitously in many parts of the... Full story

  • Column: I am not going to miss this game

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 8, 2023

When Melissa and I started the Three Forks Voice in October 2018, one of the first road trips we made was to cover the Wolves football team playoff game at Missoula Loyola High School. While Three Forks could not pick up the victory on that unseasonably warm day, it was fun to get out and experience the playoff atmosphere. I was excited about their next playoff opportunity, and when the team locked up a spot in the opening round, I made plans to go, no matter how far of a journey it was. We used to own the paper in Whitehall, which at the time... Full story

  • Coaches Corner by Ellie West: A Thanksgiving Journey

    Nov 8, 2023

Thanksgiving holds a special place in my heart. It’s my favorite Holiday. When asked why, my response is simple: “There is no pressure. It’s the one day of the year when families come together, uniting around a table overflowing with an abundance of delicious food.” The magic of this day lies in its ability to foster connection and deepen quality time with our precious family and treasured friends. One tradition I’ve cultivated, perhaps without even realizing when or why it began, is the practice of asking meaningful questions or asking ev... Full story

  • Preventing the Spread of CWD: Game animal carcasses can be disposed of at Logan Landfill

    Nov 8, 2023

Three Forks area hunters can help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) by properly disposing of game animal carcasses at three locations across Gallatin County this hunting season. Dumping carcasses is illegal, unethical, and can spread numerous diseases, including CWD, a fatal disease of deer, elk, and moose. The Gallatin Solid Waste Management District is proud to assist Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks by providing safe places to dispose of game animal carcasses. Sites include the Logan Landfill, Bozeman Convenience Site, and We... Full story

  • Gallatin County gives residents reminder of snowplow operations

    Nov 8, 2023

Gallatin County is reminding residents about how county-maintained roads are plowed. Gallatin County maintains over 1,000 miles of roads - paved, dirt and gravel - across the county. The road department removes snow and provides ice control on those county-maintained roads. Here are some things to know about how county snowplow drivers operate. *Normal working hours for plowing are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with exceptions at the discretion of the road supervisor. *Higher traffic roads are usually taken care of first. *Snow re... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 8, 2023

While their season may have ended with a loss in a November 4 quarterfinal matchup at Red Lodge, it was truly a special 2023 campaign for the Three Forks High School Football team. The Wolves finished 7-4, winning three non-conference games, three Southern B Conference games including a 22-7 over semifinals-bound Jefferson, and picked up their first playoff victory in multiple decades with a 40-22 opening-round win at Malta. Moments after the 56-18 loss to Red Lodge, Three Forks Head Coach... Full story
