Last week, the Montana Department of Transportation lowered the speed on S-287/Old Yellowstone Road from 60 to 45 miles per hour on the route between Three Forks and Willow Creek. According to MDT Public Information Officer Lori Ryan, local crews are working on installing rough road markings and temporary speed reduction signs in an effort to serve constituents in the highest capacity. • Our View: Slow it down during incidents

    Feb 15, 2023

Earlier this month, I was one of the many area residents who had the minor inconvenience of waiting in traffic for an hour because of a semi-rollover on Interstate 90 between Logan and Manhattan. While sitting in traffic was not how I envisioned spending my Friday afternoon, it happened, and I dealt with it. Accidents happen, and this one was tricky, with over 70 cattle being hauled in the semi. While our carload of three waited patiently for the traffic to move, I was horrified by what I witnessed from other people traveling in the westbound... Full story

  • Column: Can't beat a loose meat sandwich

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Feb 15, 2023

7 is off to a great start in the kitchen, seeing I’ve gone over a month without dropping a pizza in the bottom of the oven. It has been nice enough that I could probably smoke something outside, but I recently signed up for Apple TV, so I have not been too interested in getting off the couch. With a new year, I’m sure there will be plenty of new recipes mixed in with the old traditional favorites. One of the favorites that will never fall out of the rotation is “loose meat sandwiches,” aka “tavern sandwiches.” I’m not from the Midwest, wher... Full story

  • Coaches Corner by Ellie West: The Value of Time

    Feb 15, 2023

I never really overthought time until I became much older. Now, I think about it more but look at time differently. I value time more now than I did in my twenties, perhaps because I realized that the years I may have left are fewer than when I was younger. Looking back on my life, I wonder how those years have flown by so quickly. In my earlier years, I thought I had all the time in the world, which in retrospect, led to some poor decisions. There will always be distractions in our life that may cause us to lose time. But those distractions... Full story

  • Gallatin County Sheriff Springer reports increase in spam calls

    Feb 15, 2023

Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer would like to increase awareness of recent phone scams involving our office. It appears these scams occur in waves every few months. The caller says they are from the Sheriff's Office, may even use a deputy's name, informs the victim that they owe the GCSO money for some reason, such as a warrant, unpaid ticket, not showing up for court, etc. and tells them to get gift cards and/or money to send over the phone in order to avoid arrest. Please know we will... Full story

  • Snowpack Percentages Decrease After One Month of Below Normal Precipitation

    Feb 15, 2023

Following nearly three months of abundant precipitation across much of Montana, weather patterns changed in early January, producing relatively dry conditions for the month. January precipitation totals were lowest along the Rocky Mountain Front, northeastern Montana, and western Montana. Most of southwest Montana received slightly less than normal January precipitation. "The storm which brought two to three feet of mountain snow in many locations during the last week of January really saved... Full story
