Daily "hoot-owl" fishing restrictions to reduce fish stress and mortality were implemented last week at various rivers in Southwest Montana. STAFF REPORT It will be fun for all ages later this week at the Montana Antique Aircraft Association's 45th annual Three Forks Fly-In. Residents are invited to stop in on August 6 at the Three Forks Airport to check out the airplanes and for food and events for kids. There is no admission for the event. According to Pat Green of the MAAA, the event started on a Lewistown farm and was moved to Three Forks two years later. In January, Future West and the One Valley Community Foundation presented a study to the Three Forks City Council explaining the areas need for the construction of approximately 94 to 217 homes in the Three Forks area by 2026. Since the presentation, the council has approved permits and zoning changes to allow for new local housing developments. Montana’s elk population has tripled over the last 40 years. For decades we have exceeded the sustainable objective levels in most hunting districts. FWP’s goal is 92,000 elk in Montana, but today there are an estimated 175,000. That excess elk population causes immense damage to family ranch operations in overpopulated areas, and it’s a problem that grows worse every year. The Gallatin County Commission is considering asking voters to decide on a mill levy to fund operations of the Gallatin Rest Home, the soon-to-be only skilled nursing facility in the county. On Tuesday, July 26, commissioners unanimously passed a resolution of intent to put a 9-mill levy on the November general election ballot. Last week, the Montana Department of Transportation issued a construction update on the Headwaters Rest Area near Three Forks. Since the original announcement of relocating the current rest area in Bozeman to near the I 90/US 287 interchange, residents have voiced numerous concerns, including a 2021 petition aiming to halt the relocation that included over 1,000 signatures. On July 12, the Three Forks City Council approved a motion allowing Great West Engineering to continue negotiating to secure another test well site on a property near Talc Road. The property in question is owned by Conner Kent Limited Partnership, a farming and ranching company based out of Three Forks. The Three Forks Area Historical Society will NOT be having their regular monthly meeting in August. We will be serving Walking Tacos at the Farmers’ Market this Thursday, August 4th, from 4-7 PM at the John Q. Adams Milwaukee Park. The cost is $7 for a walking taco (served in a bowl), a bottle of water and a cookie. We are trying to raise funds for the ongoing restoration of the caboose and the steam engine. Plans are being made by the Three Forks Area Historical Society to celebrate the museum’s 40th anniversary. The museum first opened at 202 S. Main Street in July of 1982 in the old Three Valley’s State Bank building, one of the oldest buildings in Three Forks. The “Anniversary Celebration” will also include the annual Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social event. Cake and ice cream will be served outdoors at the museum’s back yard. Participants must comply with state fishing regulations, including daily and possession limits. Applications for fishing contests may be approved, approved with conditions or denied by the FWP Fisheries Division in Helena.
