The Three Forks Volunteer Fire Department has implemented a Junior Firefighter Program. The City Council voted earlier this month to accept the final draft of the program that is open to 16 to 18 years old. In a letter from the program handbook, Three Forks Fire Chief Keith Aune said for many; this program would be the first step in a career with the fire service. • Our View: Be kind when grabbing a bite

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 29, 2021

The other day I received a press release that announced Montana had hit a 14-year low for unemployment. At first glance, this was great news for the Treasure State, but I became confused the more I thought about it. The numbers are undoubtedly positive, but at the same time, there are plenty of places that are desperately in need of help, so the outlook is not as promising as it may appear. Businesses in Three Forks and the Gallatin Valley, especially restaurants, are having difficulty finding staff. Some fast-food establishments have closed...

  • Column: Reverse Sear

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 29, 2021

In my humble opinion, there isn’t much better to eat than a perfectly cooked steak. I always love trying a steakhouse while traveling and love to throw one on the grill during the summertime. We don’t have steak too often at the house, but there are no complaints from anyone and rarely any leftovers whenever we do. During Labor Day weekend, I had family members come to the area, and they rented a house. I did most of the cooking, and one day we decided to have steak. The rental only had a very tiny charcoal grill, and I was a bit int... Full story

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Sep 29, 2021

HELENA - The commission tasked with dividing Montana into two U.S. House districts for the first time since the 1980s asked the public for input last month. Montanans responded with an earful, submitting 231 proposed maps, some of them duplicates, and more than a hundred pages of written comment as of an initial deadline this week. The proposals are, literally, all over the map. They include efforts that group most of the state's urban areas into a single district and divide the state... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 29, 2021

Late in the opening two sets of their match last Friday against Whitehall, Three Forks High School Head Volleyball Coach Shann Mack called a timeout after the Trojans had clawed their way back from a deficit. The Wolves responded both times, winning the first two sets 25-21, 25-20 on their way to a four-set home victory, their first of the conference season. "I think the girls have been craving that conference win since we started the season. We are still battling ourselves at times, but it is...

na's expanded wolf-hunting season earlier this month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it has decided to conduct an in-depth status review to determine whether state management plans aiming to aggressively reduce wolf populations threaten the recovery of gray wolves. The agency now has a year to conduct a further review of the species using the best available science to determine whether listing under the Endangered Species Act is warranted. • Postcard From an Overrun ICU: 'The Problem Is We Are Running Out of Hallways'

    Nick Ehli, KHN|Sep 29, 2021

Nurses fill the hospital room to turn a patient from his stomach to his back. The ventilator forcing air into him is most effective when he's on his stomach, so he is in that position most hours of the day, sedated and paralyzed by drugs. Lying on his stomach all those hours has produced sores on his face, and one nurse dabs at the wounds. The dark lesions are insignificant given his current state, but she continues just the same, gently, soothingly, appearing to whisper to him as she works....
