Headwaters Bank Walk/Run next week

Participants from across Southwest Montana will be making their way to Three Forks Saturday, July 27 for the 15th annual Headwaters Bank Walk/Run.

Registration is scheduled to start at 6:30 a.m. at Veteran's Park with the Half Marathon scheduled for 7:30 a.m., and the 10k/5k starting at 8 a.m.

The origin of the race dates back to 2005 and was started by the Three Forks Lions Club. Two years later the Headwaters Trail System took over the management of the run. First Community Bank, First Security Bank, Manhattan Bank and Stockman Bank are sponsors for the event and the name was officially changed to the Headwaters Bank Walk/Run in 2010.

The Headwaters Trail System will be busy next week with runners and walkers from across Montana.

"We have seen slow, but steady growth in the event," said Pat Townsend of the Headwaters Trail System. "The participation depends on other races in the area and the number of runner-tourists visiting the area at the time of the race. A television show veterinarian from Colorado brought 30 high school students to the race one summer. We've also had many well-known local and state athletes participate in our race."

The event is open to both novice and experienced runners and walkers and according to Townsend it is always rewarding every year to see the variety of people in the race.

"We have kids and adults of all ages and abilities that participate in the three events. The philosophy of the Headwaters Trail System is to have a trail that all ages and abilities enjoy using for recreation and training," she said.

The cost to register the day of the race is $25.

Additional tax-deductible donations can also be made on race day to the Headwaters Trail System. Townsend said the event is their lone major fundraiser of the year and very important to the organization.
