Missouri Headwaters State Park Summer Speakers Series starts June 11

The Missouri Headwaters State Park 2022 Summer Speaker Series starts this week and is a wonderful opportunity for tourists and area residents to have an exciting and informative evening in a beautiful setting.

The series sponsored by the Sacajawea Hotel and Holcim Trident Plant will take place every Saturday by the park office at 7 p.m. from June 11 to August 13.

According to Montana State AmeriCorps member Melanie Hertgen, it is rewarding and exciting to host their 26th summer speaker series.

"Since it is starting to get much busier with the warmer weather, this event is a perfect way to start off our season," Hertgen said.

This year's series will be the final under the direction of Park Manager Dave Andrus, who will be retiring at the end of 2022.

This year's theme will be "Preserving Montana's history and heritage."

"Which we love, as visitors from out of state can learn about the interesting history of Montana, while local residents can truly acknowledge the importance of preserving our heritage," she said.

The first speaker of the season is Tim Ryan, who, on June 11, will discuss the 150th anniversary of Yellowstone National Park from a Native perspective.

The rest of the June schedule includes Montana songwriter and musician Rob Quist on June 18 and Hugh Grinnell, the sixth cousin of George Bird Grinnell, who will discuss the history of Glacier National Park.

On July 2, Matt Wemple will give a presentation on the History of Montana Game Wardens, followed by local songwriter and musician Buck Buchanan on July 19. The Northern Cheyenne Singers, a tribal music group is scheduled for July 16. Lewis and Clark Historian Larry Epstein is slated for July 23. The final speaker of the month is Julie Cunningham on July 30. Cunningham will present a Montana Ungulate Overview, a discussion of the ecology and biology of the hoofed mammals of Montana.

The August 6 evening will feature Reflections of a Park Manager from Andrus.

The final speaker in 2022 will be Gene Townsend on August 13, who will have a presentation with stories and anecdotes about the early Three Forks area.

The Missouri Headwaters State Park is located at 1585 Trident Road in Three Forks.
