Flying Buffalo Project this month at Madison Buffalo Jump State Park

It will be fun for all ages on September 10 at the Madison Buffalo Jump State Park near Three Forks.

The Park is hosting a Flying Buffalo Project event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to Montana State Parks AmeriCorps member Melanie Hertgen, the Flying Buffalo Project will feature activities including kite making and flying, arts and crafts, and atlatl throwing.

The origins of the project date back to 2014, when Hertgen said they wanted to host an event to celebrate Native American culture at the Park and invited SkyWindWorld founder Terry Lee to show how to build and fly kites.

"She has worked with many Native artists around the country to design beautiful buffalo-themed kites and will be showing visitors all the important components that go into building and flying a good kite," Hertgen said.

Hertgen added the event is free of charge and open to all ages.

"It is very nice to host this as we just finished up our Summer Speaker Series, so now we are able to provide some more fun to the kids and surrounding community. People can learn about some Native history in the area and about the Buffalo Jump, which was a very important hunting tool for the Natives back then. Visitors can enjoy designing their own kites and flying them around, so we are excited to provide the public with a fun day," she said.

Madison Buffalo Jump State Park is located seven miles south of the Interstate 90 interchange at Logan in Gallatin County.
