The Senior Center

March 20, 2019

The Senior Center has kept plugging along. We missed a couple of days for deep snow, but it looks like we’re over the worst of it now. When there are enough players, we have Bingo on Thursdays at 12:30. There have been enough players every Saturday at 2:00, and Bingo is played then. Anyone who wishes to come play with us either time is welcome. Cards are $1 each and the money is paid out to the winnners.

Wednesday Pinochle sometimes has only 6 players and, when that happens, we play a few games of 6-handed double-deck Pinochle, but not for the record. Last Wednesday there were eight of us, and we played two 4-hand tables. Lalia Covey had the highest score, then Jean Leith, me, and Dorothy LeTempt. Lalia and Mel Hamilton shared the Double Pinochle pot. Anyone who wishes to play Pinochle with us is welcome. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at about 12:30 we divvy up into groups and play 4-handed or 5-handed or 6-handed. No money is involved those days. On Wednesday, you pay 60 cents to play and put a dime in the Double Pinochle pot when you go set. The 60 cents goes to the four highest scores, and the pot goes to the last Double Pinochle melded. There is a special place for the lowest scoring person’s score card: “on the piano.” This is where there we have a little yellow plastic chick flapping its little wings and we’ve assumed it’s a booby bird chick so that’s the booby prize - to have your score card with your name on it, of course, “on the piano.”

Anyone (of any age!) is welcome to join us for dinner or Pinochle or Bingo. We ask that you call 285-3235 and leave a message by 8:00 am to reserve a spot for dinner (so Trish knows how many to cook for). She does such a good job we are fortunate that she is our cook. No matter what’s on the menu it will be good. Your $6.00 covers the entree, side dishes, dessert, coffee, OJ, milk, etc. If you are lucky enough to be 60 or older, you are only asked to pay $4.00 for all of the above.

If you are a jigsaw puzzle worker, come and swap puzzles with us, or borrow one to take home or work on the one we have going. We also have a lot of books, videos, CDs, etc. that you may borrow with no fee and no time limit.

There are also many items of health equipment you may borrow for as long as you need. Why buy something for temporary use?

If you wish to join the Senior Center (you must be at least 50 years of age) the charge is $10/year. This gets you 24/7 access to the workout room with treadmills, stationary bikes, etc., and the right to bring your outdoor potted plants to winter over in the workout room. It has HUGE south windows and the plants enjoy being there. (I know - they’ve told me.)

A man got hearing aids for the first time. When he went back for a followup, he was asked, “Is your family happy that now you can hear better?” He said, “No, I haven’t told anyone yet that I got them. But I’ve changed my will four times now.”
