Three Forks area residents can help out Cub Scout Pack 3523 later this week by taking part in the annual Scouting For Food Drive. Members of the pack will be on hand Saturday, February 1 at Three Forks Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in their effort to raise more than 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food for the Headwaters Area Food Bank.

Pack 3523 is participating in the 2020 Scouting for Food event as part of its scout week activities. Scouting for Food is a national movement supported by Boy Scouts of America with each local council setting its program dates. In Montana, it is held in February during scout week. Our park has partnered with the Three Forks Market and Headwaters Area Food Bank on this community service project for the past 3 years. Last year, the pack brought in nearly 800 pounds of non-perishable food. Our work began in December scouts distributed fliers during the local Christmas Stroll. The older scouts also have been preparing banners and donation bins.

This event is a great opportunity for adult leaders to teach cub scouts about hunger as both national and local problems and show them that what they do on the local level makes an impact. Following the drive on Saturday scouts will take donated food to the local food bank, weigh it, and help stock shelves. From past experience, cub scouts are so "pumped" after the event knowing that service they provided.

The Scouting for Food event is just one of the community service projects and activities in which Pack 3523 participates. In fact, on the same morning of the food drive, scouts will be doing a flag ceremony at the dedication and unveiling ceremony of the new plaque honoring Japanese WWII veterans with ties to Three Forks. The pack also puts flags out veterans' graves at the local cemetery. The pack also provides service to is sponsoring organization including distributing roses on mothers' day.

The pack has a busy spring planned with pinewood derby, visits to the Museum of the Rockies, several hikes and fishing trips, as well as day camp in June.

With nearly 40 registered cub scouts Pack 3523 is sponsored by the Three Forks United Methodist Church at meetings every Monday night from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with new members always welcome. 3523 is a family scouting cub scout program serving girls and boys in Three Forks, Manhattan, Harrison, and Belgrade in Kindergarten through the 5th grade.

Family Scouting is part of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), which provides the nation's foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be "Prepared. For Life. ®" The Scouting organization is composed of nearly 2.2 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and approximately 960,000 volunteers in local councils throughout the United States and its territories.

Pack 3523 is part of the Mountain Valley District of the Montana Council, BSA.
