Our View: Plenty of Positives

April 22, 2020

Over the past few months, I have certainly read about and even personally witnessed people acting in a manner that is not appealing to anyone. While there are certainly been a number of bad apples who are not following recommendations or directives or possibly being nasty to a store employee, I much rather focus on the good I see from people.

The other morning, I arrived at my Whitehall to see someone had left a very encouraging message on our sidewalk in chalk and found out there were numerous other similar messages left at places like town hall and the post office. It was so nice to see someone spending a few minutes of their time to make someone else feel appreciated. Acts like that do make a difference.

The Three Forks Community Library has been doing great things with a streamed storytime.

Another wonderful thing I have witnessed has been happening weekly at the Three Forks Library. Storytime on Thursday has always been a huge hit with local families and librarian Fawn Venzor has kept this going through Facebook. Just because the kids can't physically be at the library, it is not stopping Venzor from giving them a live story time each week. Younger kids may not fully understand why they can't go to the movies or library but having a storytime still is important to them and their families.

I used to get really frustrated but what I see on social media in relation to COVID-19, but I have decided to just look at the positive. I have read of multiple local residents who are volunteering to do what they can to help other people. Whether it be to deliver meals, donate food, or another gesture they are also making a difference.

Often times the negativity and anxiety of this pandemic can be alarming, but take a look around at the good in small-town America --- it is everywhere.

While I agree on focusing on the positives, it's a real problem when we see so many not following the directives and guidelines as this perpetuates the spread. But I realize our local government isn't helping, by their own admission they are not citing, or fining anyone so it continues.
