Farmers to Families Assists Area Residents

From May 1 to September 16, the Headwaters Area Food Bank has been able to help 822 families in Gallatin, Madison, and Jefferson Counties through the Farmers to Families program.

According to Kim Gelder, Food Bank Operations Manager, on April 17 the USDA announced its plan to start the Farmers to Family Program due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

"The program is supplying food boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meat products, and a combination box of fresh produce, dairy or meat products. Distributors are packaging these products into family-sized boxes, then transport them to food banks and other non-profits serving Americans in need. With help from Gallatin Valley Food Bank we are able to tap into those resources as well," Gelder said.

As far as current needs at the Headwaters Area Food Bank, Gelder hopes they can receive donations of macaroni and cheese, egg noodles, canned vegetables, and hearty soups. She added another way people can help is through financial donations.

"We can turn that around and purchase exactly what we need at a greater discount from places like the Montana Food Bank Network," she said.

Donations can be mailed to: Headwaters Area Food Bank, PO Box 836, Three Forks MT 59752.
