Solid start to season for Wolves tennis

There were many positives in the season-opening competition for the Three Forks High School Tennis team.

According to Head Coach Janna Lauver, the team opened on March 31 against Granite and Jefferson, with matches played in Three Forks and Manhattan.

"It ended up being a good day. We rescheduled Jefferson to bring over their Varsity, so we started at 10 a.m. on a single dry court in Three Forks while we worked on the snow-covered courts in Manhattan," said Lauver. "This was all three teams' first meet of the year, so we are all pretty happy to be on a court at all."

Following the season opener, Lauver said she saw huge growth from singles players Sophie Meskimen and Sarah Christmas.

"(Sophie) Meskimen had divisional play last year on Varsity and played the #1 singles spot this weekend and continues to nail down her strategy and the things she wants to improve on. (Sarah) Christman started the switch from doubles to singles late last spring and is getting familiar with covering the whole court and doing great," Lauver said.

Ruby Warden and Alicia Deriana picked up a pair of wins in doubles play.

"They continue to work and communicate well with each other. They make great strategic moves together," Lauver said.

At number two doubles, Malia Eriksson and Claire Cutler also had a pair of wins for the Wolves.

"They are second years plays working hard to improve their strategy, and it was great to see them step up," Lauver said.

In other doubles action, Lauver said Warden and Meskimen played a great exhibition match against Jefferson, and it was great for them to play together.

In the battle against the Granite JV, Lauver said they played shortened sets, so their opponent could also get matches in with Jefferson on the two courts that were free of ice.

"We saw some fun and challenging first-ever single matches for Carly Lema and Dani Kober as singles. Christman won a shortened match against Granite's Senior Terese Buhr.

"We played a whole bunch of mixed doubles with our sophomores and freshmen to see who might play well together this season. They enjoyed getting on the court and are picking up the game fast, and really fun to watch them learning the game," Lauver said.
