School Board Candidate Profile: Lori Van Vleet

Could you please give a bit of background about yourself?

I was born and raised in Wyoming, where I received my Masters in Social Work. I am married to Jason Van Vleet, and we have three amazing teenagers! We have owned a masonry business here in the valley for 20 years! We both grew up in small rural towns and wanted that experience for our kids, so we moved to Three Forks.

Why did you choose to run, and what qualities would you personally bring to the board?

I have the time and energy to commit to this position just like I did when I served for 4 years in 2015. I loved the entire experience, along with the challenges. I am a conservative who values fiscal responsibility and enjoy using all of the previous training I have in communication and working as a team. I am who I am. Transparency is so key because you do not want to elect a person who presents one way during their campaign but truly has another side that may be a detriment to the board and overall success of the district.

What are the biggest challenges for the district?

Currently, I see the passing of the operational mill levy as the biggest challenge. I personally understand the importance of it passing but many of our voters are being squeezed by the current economy and fixed incomes. We need to reach out and communicate with all stakeholders! Our kids are the future, and the opportunities need to be there for them to be a competitive force as well as contributing members of society.

What do you think the district is doing well?

The addition, as well as focusing on the retention of amazing staff are where we shine as a district. Superintendent Uthlaut has been such an amazing addition to our community. Her outside perspective and experience have been key to getting us this far over the last year. My 3 teenagers are like internal spies! I get to hear everything that is going on internally, and it is only getting better.

Thank you for allowing me to share! Send in your ballots, and let your voice be heard!
