OLLI at MSU to host presentation about urban camping

MSU News Service

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at MSU will host a presentation on "Understanding and Managing Local Urban Camping" during its monthly Friday Forum on Oct. 13 via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public and will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m.

HRDC Housing Director Brian Guyer and Bozeman City Manager Jeff Mihelich will discuss the history and challenges of urban camping in Bozeman. Urban camping is influenced by issues including affordable housing, worker shortages and the cost of living, according to Guyer.

Guyer and Mihelich will address the city ordinance passed in September to manage the use of streets and public spaces for urban camping and answer questions on this issue.

Mihelich began as Bozeman's city manager in 2020. He is a credentialed city manager with the International City/County Management Association and has 28 years of experience in large cities, small towns and counties. His most recent term was as deputy city manager and chief operating officer of Fort Collins, Colorado.

Guyer has worked for HRDC since 2015. Previously, he worked for an affordable housing nonprofit in Park City, Utah. Guyer has served on the board of Trust Montana, a community land trust working to build affordable stock of agricultural properties, commercial spaces and homes for Montanans. He has also served on the city of Bozeman Affordable Housing Advisory Board.
