  • Writers on the Range: Backcountry adventurers know they're taking chances

Molly Absolon, Writers on the Range|Mar 1, 2023

Six people have died in avalanches in the United States since the snow started to fly this fall. Every year, an average of 27 people -skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, snowshoers - die this way. For people who don't venture into the backcountry in winter, the thought of potentially dying in an avalanche seems crazy. Why put your life on the line for a few minutes of fun? But most of us who ride fresh powder don't look at it that way: We don't consider backcountry skiing a death-defying... Full story

  • Column: No popcorn chicken? Time to riot

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 1, 2023

You can’t log onto social media these days without seeing some vitriol spewing in the comments sections. It really is unfortunate, and I miss the days when all I would see were pictures of people’s families. At this point, I’d even settle for watching videos of fireworks on the Fourth of July that never turn out well but get posted anyway. I do my best to navigate through the cesspool associated with an online experience, but sometimes I go down a rabbit hole I wish I would never have entered. This was certainly the case the other day, and it s... Full story

  • Coaches Corner: Are you feeling stuck?

    Ellie West, Contributing Writer|Mar 1, 2023

How many of you feel stuck... in life or vocation? I have often felt stuck and had plenty of reasons to believe I wasn’t enough or capable. First, I was in a remedial reading group in second grade. Second, I stood before my peers with a dunce hat on at a young age. And third, I remember my dad telling me to get an excellent job with great benefits, work for 30-plus years, and then retire, thus creating a feeling of being stuck. Those experiences and words planted a seed in me at a young age, making me feel like I wasn’t enough or capable. You... Full story

  • Mount Vernon? Yes. Montana mountains? Not so much.

    Renee Daniels-Mantle, Contributing Writer|Mar 1, 2023

It is not something you expect to see in Montana. You'll do a double take and rub your eyes the first time you round the bend in ranch country and catch a glimpse of a pack of foxhounds followed by a bunch of people horseback, some wearing scarlet coats and hunt caps, some Carharts and cowboy hats. You'll want to stop and watch as some sail over a jump put across a barbed wire fence in the middle of a cow pasture. You will probably hear the huntsman's horn and the hounds in full cry. And if you... Full story
