  • Our View: Be mindful on state highways

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 19, 2023

With my residence directly off a state highway, I’m aware that there will always be more traffic in the summer months, especially from Friday to Sunday. Montana is such a beautiful place, and I understand Treasure State residents and out-of-state tourists increase the traffic on the road on their camping, or some other recreation, or to visit friends and family. One thing I don’t understand is the way some people choose to drive. While the speed limit on the highway I live off is usually 70, I live in a 45 zone. I generally see people going tha... Full story

  • Our View: I burned my foot making dinner

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Jul 19, 2023

Having owned a weekly paper in Montana for over a decade, there is certainly a routine in everyday life. There are always the same deadlines to be met, and while sometimes it might feel like the movie “Groundhog Day,” I enjoy what I do for a living and the structure it provides. The same can be said when I am in the kitchen, I have a routine, and because of this, we often eat many of the same things. I don’t necessarily think this is bad because everyone at the house seems to enjoy the rotation of meals. Every once in a while, I will get a lit... Full story

  • With More People Giving Birth at Home, Montana lawmakers Passed a Pair of Laws to Make It Easier

    Keely Larson, KFF|Jul 19, 2023

Ashley Jones’ three children were born in three different places — a hospital, a birth center, and at home. Jones, who is 31 and lives in Belgrade, Montana, said she had “zero control over what was going on” during her hospital birth. Jones wanted a midwife to help deliver her third child, and after finding one she clicked with, she decided to go with a home birth. “I felt like I was in control of everything and she was there to listen to what I needed from her,” Jones said. The only downside, from Jones’ perspective, was that her insurance did...

  • A Plan to Cut Montana's Medicaid Waiting List Was Met With Bipartisan Cheers. Then a Veto.

    Mike Dennison, KFF|Jul 19, 2023

Montana state Sen. Becky Beard thought she’d found a fix for a shortage of assisted living care options for Montanans who can’t afford to pay for it themselves — a shortage she became aware of while searching for a suitable place for her mother to live. Beard, a Republican from the rural town of Elliston, ushered a bill through the GOP-controlled legislature this spring. The proposal would have moved more than 200 people off waiting lists for government-supported care and saved the state money by accessing more federal Medicaid money to cover...

  • Five ways to lower Montana's residential property taxes

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Jul 19, 2023

Homeowners across Montana received a nasty shock in the mail last month, coming in the form of state property reappraisal notices that generally indicated the 2023 valuations used to calculate property taxes have spiked over the two-year reappraisal cycle. It’s unlikely those valuation increases, 46% on median statewide, will translate into equivalent increases when country treasurers mail out actual property tax bills this fall. That’s because the tax estimates included on the reappraisal notices don’t account for how across-the-board value...

  • Warm water, low flows prompt hoot-owl fishing restrictions on Madison

    Jul 19, 2023

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is advising anglers that portions of the Sun and lower Madison rivers are closed to all fishing daily from 2 p.m. to midnight. The restrictions will stay in effect until conditions improve. The hoot-owl restrictions are issued for: • Sun River – from the Highway 287 Bridge to the mouth of Muddy Creek. • Madison River – from Warm Springs Boat Launch to the confluence with the Jefferson River FWP's drought policy provides for angling restrictions when flows drop below critical levels for fish, when water quality... Full story

  • Coaches Corner by Ellie West: Our Values

    Jul 19, 2023

Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on the values that guide your life and where they come from? Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a practice session centered around NLP as I near the completion of my Masters’s Certification. During this session, a process was introduced to help us define our values, and it was truly enlightening. As I listed my top ten values and went through the process, I discovered something fascinating - some of my values shifted. Even though my values remained fairly congruent, I realized that our valu...
