There will not be a November election for three open seats on the Three Forks City Council. At a meeting last week, the Three Forks Council approved a resolution canceling the election for three full-term seats on the Council. The mail-only election had been scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, for the three four-year Council terms. With the passing of the resolution, current Council member Ed Tharp will be elected by acclimation. Tharp was appointed to the Council in February after the resignation of Steve Dahl. While it was stated at the... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 13, 2023

For the second straight week against some of the top competition in the state, the Three Forks High School Cross Country team once again shined at last Saturday's Bozeman Invite. "We had a great meet. Our girls did very well. Bella Jones and Teegan Gifford ran in the mid 21's. We just need to work on tightening up as a whole, but I'm very pleased with all of their efforts," Head Coach Tara Forsberg said. Jones led the Lady Wolves with a time of 21:24.88, and Gifford finished with a time of... Full story

  • Fishing Restrictions Lifted, FWP Accepting Contest Applications

    Sep 13, 2023

Hoot owl restrictions were lifted last week on all sections of the Madison River and Sun River. These were the last fishing restrictions that were still in effect in Montana. Hoot owl fishing restrictions prohibit fishing each day between 2 p.m. and midnight. Angling restrictions are implemented based on several considerations: stream flow, water temperatures, angling pressure and other angling restrictions in the area that may divert use to waterways where circumstances are increasing stress on the fishery. For current information on... Full story

  • Writers on the Range: There's such a thing as trail etiquette

Marjorie Woodruff, Writers on the Range|Sep 13, 2023

The uppermost switchback on the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park is eight feet wide. Yet the last time I hiked out, I was stymied by a group of young hikers walking down shoulder to shoulder, tapping on their phones. Even when I said, "Ahem, excuse me," I was unceremoniously nudged out of the way - not on the cliff side, but still. It shouldn't need mentioning, but while walking on a rocky trail where one may fall to one's death, it is best not to be watching one's phone. And in case you were wondering, uphill has the right of... Full story

  • Column: Another delay at the alma mater

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 13, 2023

My mom was recently able to make a trip from Wyoming to visit us over Labor Day weekend. During her near-week stay, we watched the University of Wyoming football team play a ranked Texas Tech team in a game nationally televised on CBS. I have watched hundreds of Wyoming games on various networks, but it was a real treat to see them get the primetime slot on the second-most-watched network in the country. It brought back memories of the last time they had a primetime spot on a “big three” network and a bus trip that never seemed to end. A few... Full story

  • Coaches Corner: Hope is not merely a tiny word

    Ellie West, Contributing Writer|Sep 13, 2023

I have been inspired to write this week’s article on hope. I have a treasured friend who mentioned hope on one of his reels, and it got me thinking about hope. He was looking for a definition of hope and what it means. It is one word that I believe is difficult to narrow down. From his journal, he read, “Hope and hopelessness are part of my disease. Hope tells me there is a better way.” I couldn’t agree more. There is a better way. Hope is not merely a tiny word; it wears big shoes of unwavering determination. It is the tie that connect... Full story

  • Environmental groups challenge logging project bordering Yellowstone National Park

    Amanda Eggert, Montana Free Press|Sep 13, 2023

Three environmental groups signaled Wednesday their intention to stop a 16,000-acre logging and prescribed-fire project located in a national forest west of Yellowstone National Park. In their notice of intent to sue the Custer Gallatin National Forest, the Center for Biological Diversity, Alliance for the Wild Rockies and Council on Wildlife and Fish argued that the South Plateau Project’s clear-cutting, logging and road-building will threaten grizzly bears and lynx, both of which are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. • Wolves dominate visiting Trojans

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 13, 2023

After two road games to start the season, Three Forks High School Head Football Coach Connor Sullivan said his team was excited to get out and play their home opener on September 7 against visiting Whitehall. The Wolves put on quite a show for the fans at John Overstreet Field, scoring six first-half touchdowns on their way to a dominant 45-0 win over the visiting Trojans. Three Forks would get their first touchdown of the night with 4:29 left in the opening quarter when senior quarterback... Full story

  • With proposed ordinance, Bozeman looks to curb advance of urban camping

    Matt Standal, Montana Free Press|Sep 13, 2023

For Bozeman police officer Scott Vongehr, a trip to the city's urban encampments is like a scavenger hunt for items you'd normally see at a garage sale or in your neighbor's messy backyard. Whether it's a stack of snow tires waiting for winter, a broken-down riding lawn mower that somebody promises to fix or a vehicle transmission that needs wrenching, Vongehr said these items show that Bozeman's urban campers are here to stay, even as the city struggles to put limits on them. Vongehr is the... Full story
