  • Has Montana solved its housing crisis?

    Susan Shain, High Country News|Nov 29, 2023

Connie Howell has lived in Montana for 40 years, nearly half that time in a tan-and-brick apartment complex in Bozeman. It's always been a pleasant place, with a small courtyard and distant views of the Bridger Mountains. But since 2015, the rent for the one-bedroom unit that she shares with her husband, Chris, has nearly doubled. The couple, who depend on Social Security and disability payments, now put about half of their monthly gross income toward rent. Affordable housing, in contrast, is ge... Full story

  • Recycling Bins: Be mindful of what's deposited

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 29, 2023

While residents of the Gallatin Valley have the convenience of dropping off items at recycle bins, including at 150 E. Railroad Avenue in Three Forks, county officials remind them to be mindful of what they deposit. According to Logan Landfill Recycling and Outreach Educator Patty Howard, there is a lot of contamination in the recycling bins. The bins accept cardboard, mixed paper, aluminum and steel cans, and #1 and #2 plastic bottles. "People either think they know what can be put in the bins... Full story

    Audrey Cromwell, Gallatin County Attorney|Nov 29, 2023

As your Gallatin County Attorney and elected public servant, I believe in on-going transparency and accountability to the community. In that respect, I’d like to update you with regard to the 113 unprosecuted sexual assault cases (52 involving children) dating back over 15 years that I discovered upon taking office. As pledged in my initial press release, I spearheaded a Joint Task Force comprised of Bozeman and Belgrade city prosecutors and detectives, the West Yellowstone and Manhattan prosecutor, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, the... Full story

  • Column: Did we just leave the turkey brine outside all night?

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 29, 2023

As much as I would have liked to visit my mom for Thanksgiving last week, it was too difficult to deliver the paper in Three Forks on Wednesday and prepare to publish the December edition of the Lewis and Clark Journal. Since traveling can be tricky with the papers, we have established a nice little routine for Thanksgiving and once were lucky enough to have three family members join in on the festivities. The year my family came, my older sister made us all wear “turkey” hats, and before dinner, we had to put them on and say what we were tha... Full story

  • Coaches Corner Wings of Words: Soaring into New Heights

    Ellie West, Contributing Writer|Nov 29, 2023

As this year draws to a close, I find myself pausing to reflect on the past year's journey. Considering how writing brought a sense of hope and inspiration to the community, I have come to a threshold of letting go of what has filled my heart to overflowing these past few years. People often ask me, "How did you start writing for the papers?" It all began two years ago over lunch with a friend. I shared with her that I sensed God had called me to write articles that would inspire and bring hope and encouragement to my community. Living in this... Full story

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Nov 29, 2023

Without a senior on the roster, the 2022-23 Three Forks High School Boys’ Basketball team finished at the top of the conference standings in the regular season and took home the 5B District Tournament title before falling one game short of a spot at the state tournament. • Montana Supreme Court says counties wrong on 95-mill tax issue

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Nov 29, 2023

The Montana Supreme Court ruled last week against Montana county governments in a dispute over the Montana Department of Revenue's authority to order the full collection of the 95-mill state-level school equalization levy, a formerly obscure piece of tax bills that became a flash-point this fall as state and local officials contended with frustration over rising property taxes. The ruling means that the 49 of 56 Montana counties that chose to collect a lower, 77.9-mill rate on tax bills sent to...
