  • Guest Editorial: NWE Plans Protect Montana Customers

    Commissioner Richard Dunbar|Mar 13, 2024

Disclaimer: The views expressed in Op-Ed’s published in the Three Forks Voice are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the publication. Over the last several weeks we’ve seen a number of articles—both editorial and from news reporters—that lay blame for the need to purchase electricity on the open market at the feet of NorthWestern Energy and their recent efforts to expand their portfolio to include more reliable energy from coal and natural gas. In no uncertain terms, the litany of articles published since the beginni... Full story

  • Column: Shooting rocks out of his nose

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Mar 13, 2024

Every so often, I visit realtor.com and search for my hometown of Rock Springs, Wyoming. My search isn’t because I’m interested in moving back. I’ve been in Montana for nearly a decade, and outside of family and a few select friends, there isn’t much desirable for me at the place I called home for so long. The reason why I check for homes is to see if my favorite place growing up, my grandparents’ home at 206 Dickson Avenue, is up for sale. Granted, if I were super rich, I would definitely snatch up the house in a heartbeat, but I’m just... Full story

  • School leaders attribute budget crises to pandemic funding cliff, state funding frustrations

    Alex Sakariassen, Montana Free Press|Mar 13, 2024

A wave of major budget cuts is hitting public schools across the state - a situation officials from four of Montana's largest districts attribute to declining enrollment, inflexibilities in the state's school funding formula, and a funding cliff facing schools as pandemic-era federal relief money runs out. District leaders from the Helena, Great Falls, Bozeman and Missoula public schools, meeting with reporters in Helena Friday, also said increased property values and the rising cost of living in the state are major factors impacting their...

  • Court denies Gianforte's request to stay ruling in veto lawsuit

    Arren Kimbel-Sannit, Montana Free Press|Mar 13, 2024

A Lewis and Clark County district court judge last week denied a request from Gov. Greg Gianforte to stay enforcement of a prior order directing him to allow lawmakers to override his veto of a 2023 marijuana tax revenue bill. Judge Mike Menahan’s ruling on March 5 does not guarantee that lawmakers will be able to override Gianforte’s veto of Senate Bill 442, legislation that allocated tax revenues from marijuana sales to conservation, veterans and county infrastructure programs. But it does start a 14-day clock for the governor and the Mon...

    Stacker|Mar 13, 2024

The next time you're in a security line at the airport, you may find that instead of a Transportation Security Administration officer checking your ID, a camera and screen will use biometric facial recognition to confirm your face and photo ID match and ensure your ID isn't fake. The TSA has installed the system in over 200 U.S. airports to improve identity verification accuracy and keep its lines moving. Spokeo used information from Customs and Border Protection to see how many airports in each...

Many small businesses get their start and scale up with SBA loans, which increased lending to Black, Latino, and women entrepreneurs in the past few years in step with efforts to become more equitable. Flippa found the county in Montana where applicants were approved for the most SBA l...

    Stacker|Mar 13, 2024

When Purdue Pharma first began sales of OxyContin in the late 1990s, it was advertised as relief for cancer patients and people with chronic pain. Aggressive marketing fueled the drug's popularity, along with that of other opioid pain management drugs on the market. But as the company touted OxyContin to physicians, it downplayed the drug's addictiveness, according to confidential Justice Department reports obtained by news organizations, leading to widespread use that has fueled an opioid...
