Abbie Clark, Three Forks High School Journalism Student|Sep 27, 2023

The 2023-2024 school year started off with a brand-new weight room. After having an outdated and worn-out weight room for years it was decided there needed to be an update. Jake Lynch, middle school principal, had been planning out a new weight room since he was hired four years ago. The weight room was going to be remodeled originally along with the rest of the basement, with the bond. The original closets were taken out to create more space. • Guest Editorial: Let's Focus on Property Tax Solutions Not Political Soundbites

    Representative Llew Jones, Appropriations Chairman|Sep 27, 2023

Montana is facing a growing housing crisis, driven by an influx of out-of-state home buyers and telecommuters. This is pushing up prices, making it difficult for Montanans to find affordable housing, and increasing residential property taxes. A solution I propose for consideration is to change the way property taxes are calculated for vacation homes and short-term rentals. Currently, all residential properties are taxed at the same rate, regardless of whether they are owner-occupied, rented out long-term, rented out short-term, or vacation... Full story

  • Column: I bought the wrong sausage

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 27, 2023

As I sit here at my desk writing my weekly, it is raining cats and dogs, and for the first time in months, my heater kicked on. While I am not looking forward to using propane because filling the tank can devastate my budget, I look forward to the tradition of “Soup Sunday” at our home during the year’s colder months. It’s always quite a bit of fun to put together a soup on a cold Sunday between the plethora of NFL games we watch rooting on our favorite teams or hoping for a great day for our fantasy squad. Last week, Melissa and Shayla... Full story

  • Restrictions and Requirements in Place for Fall Burning to Protect Air Quality

    Sep 27, 2023

Fall has arrived and that means if you plan to burn now through November 30, 2023, there are restrictions and requirements in place to protect Montana’s air quality. Burning should comply with state and local air quality rules. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) encourages safe burning practices and good judgment to prevent wildfires. Follow these steps to burn September through November: • Obtain a permit from your local fire control authority at https://app.egovmt.com/burnpermit/. If your county is not listed on the website... Full story

  • Coaches Corner Navigating Grief: Finding Strength and Hope in the Storm

    Ellie West, Contributing Writer|Sep 27, 2023

Grief is an inescapable facet of the human experience—a journey that can catch us off guard, leaving us with unsettled emotions. I, too, found myself in this uncharted territory when I first experienced the loss of my father. In the years that followed, I would grieve, saying goodbye to my oldest sister, my mother, and another sibling, my brother. These deeply personal encounters with grief taught me that we are not alone in our pain. Although I had witnessed loss in various forms throughout my life, facing it within my own family brought grief...

  • Letter to the Editor: Show appreciation and respect for tow truck drivers

    Sep 27, 2023

As a past Paramedic/firefighter I want to acknowledge another 1st Responder that is rarely recognized or thanked. Recently one of our County Newspaper articles had a thank you given only to the Police, Fire, and ambulance. We do not seem to value our Tow Truck Drivers. They too face the horrors of every bad accident scene; get called out at all hours of the night and work in the worst weather, longer than the other 1st responders. More Tow Truck Drivers are killed or injured every year on these calls than police or fire personnel. WHY? Because... Full story

  • Montana counties, governor spar over property tax that funds schools

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Sep 27, 2023

Months of finger-pointing between state-level Republicans and local government leaders over who to blame for rising property taxes escalated last week as the lobbying organization that represents county governments sent a late-night press release that, among other points, singled out Gov. Greg Gianforte’s personal property tax bill. The release, sent by the Montana Association of Counties at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, said the association’s math shows that taxes on Gianforte’s personal home in Helena’s mansion district neighborhood are likely... Full story

  • New census data helps define Montana's affordable housing crunch

    Eric Dietrich, Montana Free Press|Sep 27, 2023

Just how deep do Montana's widely discussed housing affordability woes run? Newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau sheds some statistical light on one facet of the challenge. Housing affordability is a product of two things: how much it costs people to keep a roof over their heads, and how much income they have to pay for it. While Montana has seen ballooning housing prices in recent years, the state's population is also earning more. The census figures indicate the median monthly... Full story

  • Rural Press Call: Tester Discusses Defending Hunters Education Act

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 27, 2023

In his monthly Rural Press Call, U.S. Senator Jon Tester discussed the Defending Hunters Education Act, which would force the Biden Administration to reverse course on the recent decision to prohibit the use of federal funds for hunter education and school archery classes. "Hunting is a big part of our Montana way of life, whether it's the rifle, shotgun, or bow. Montanans make memories and fill their freezers every fall hunting," said Tester. "Part of preserving that tradition as well protecting our Second Amendment rights is making sure our... Full story

  • Wolves move to 4-1 with home win over Jefferson

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Sep 27, 2023

After falling behind 7-0 early in the fourth quarter of their September 22 conference home game against Jefferson High School (Boulder), the Three Forks High School football team would respond emphatically, not allowing another Panthers score and controlling the chains on offense en route to an impressive 22-7 victory. Moments after the victory in a game that featured a steady rain from kickoff to the final whistle, an emotional Head Coach Connor Sullivan praised the squad and the journey to their first Southern B Conference win since the 2018... Full story
