Smoke from open burning can get trapped in Montana's mountain valleys during wintertime inversions causing poor air quality. For this reason, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) reviews atmospheric conditions daily during the winter months to determine when and where it's safe to burn. • Column: Never a bad meal

    Jack H. Smith, Three Forks Voice|Dec 8, 2021

It would be pretty safe to say that I was one of many devastated a few months ago with the news that the LaHood Park Steakhouse near Cardwell was a total loss due to a fire. I recently read a book about the Sacajawea Hotel, and it mentions how Three Forks residents will often feel an “ownership” of the building, which certainly applied to LaHood. I know of many people who considered the long-established restaurant part of their family, and a special event was always celebrated with a trip to the establishment outside of Cardwell. I know qui...

  • Addictive Birding Behavior: Search for Brambling leads to Three Forks

    Gary Swant, GoBirdMontana|Dec 8, 2021

My wife claims that I am addicted to birding. I adamantly deny that claim, though I have never tried to quit since I seriously started in 1993. The reason that my wife says am addicted is that I will chase the same bird year after year even though I have seen it many times. She thinks that is an addictive behavior. The only evidence of my birding becoming addictive is about this time of year when there is an uncommon bird, but not a rare one, I will drive to Great Falls or Missoula to get it,... Full story

    Alex Sakariassen, Montana Free Press|Dec 8, 2021

On November 30, Lewis and Clark County District Court Judge Michael McMahon struck down provisions of Montana's new "constitutional carry" law that apply to college campuses, ruling that the law violates the constitutional authority of the Montana Board of Regents. The board filed the lawsuit against the state in May. In his order, issued shortly after the latest round of oral arguments in the case, McMahon said the Montana Constitution grants the Board of Regents (BOR) sole power to determine firearm policies on campuses within the Montana...
